How to change where EA Origin games are installed on your PC

  • Changing the installation folder improves space management.
  • Origin allows you to select the location of your game library.
  • Existing installations will not be affected by this change.
  • Using an HDD for gaming reduces the load on the SDD.

Last week we shared a tutorial on how to change the default installation folder for games purchased or downloaded for free on Steam. When you have a multi-drive setup , including an SSD, it's crucial to download updates, as SSDs don't have the same lifespan as standard HDDs.

This is why, if you frequently play video games, you'll likely have those from Electronic Arts installed in the Origin folder, the Steam-like hub installed on your PC. Origin automatically installs all the games you install on your computer to a specific folder , which is why we're showing you how to change the location of those games.

How to change the game installation location with EA Origin

The Origin client recently received an interesting update that has greatly improved things to offer a better user experience than one used to get when installing some of its top games.

  • The first thing to do is go to the upper menu bar where we select "Origin"
  • We click on "Application Settings"

Origin

  • In the window that opens, we select from the upper tabs the option "Installations and saved games"

Installations

  • Under «On your computer» you can find "Game Library Location"
  • We click on "Change folder"

Change folder

  • We select or create the desired folder in the hard drive HDD where we will have it stored
  • select «Select folder»

This change won't affect any of the installations you already have on your PC, but it will ensure that any new video games or downloads you make in the future will be stored in this newly created folder. This way, as I mentioned, you'll offload work from the SSD intended for the operating system.
