How to make Discord not start automatically?

Discord, the popular social platform that so many gamers use to create chat groups for games and other utilities, starts automatically on our computer once installed on it. In this article we explain how to stop discord from auto-starting.

That an application that we use often opens automatically during startup is, in principle, an advantage. But not all users like it. Among other things, because It usually operates in the background, consuming our computer's resources.

If we want to avoid this, we have several methods to prevent Discord from automatically starting on our computer every time we turn it on. The first one (recommended) is a native solution. The rest are solutions to use on Windows or macOS. We explain them in more detail in the following paragraphs:

From the application itself

There is a internal option within Discord that we can use to disable the automatic startup at system startup. For this reason, it is the most recommended of all. We can use it in the following way:

  1. First of all, you have to open the Discord app.
  2. Then we click on the gear icon (located in the lower left corner of the screen) to open the menu. Configuration.
  3.  Next, in the menu on the left, we look for the option Configuring Windows.
  4. Finally, in this section we deactivate the option of «Open Discord on startup».

As you can see, it is a very simple and easy setting to implement. With this, Discord will stop starting automatically every time we turn on our computer.

From Task Manager (Windows)

If, for whatever reason, the above method has not worked or we want to use another one, this is a valid and easy-to-apply solution: Disable Discord Auto-Start from Task Manager on Windows. Here's how we can do it:

  1. To start, we right-click on the Taskbar and, in the menu that opens, we select "Task Manager".*
  2. Next, we go to the tab Start.
  3. In the list of programs, we look for Discord.
  4. We right click on Discord and select the option "Disable".

And that's it. With these simple steps we will also ensure that Discord does not start automatically every time we turn on the computer.

(*) Another easy way to do this is to use the key combination Ctrl + Shift + Esc.

From the Startup Programs folder (Windows)

There is still another option in Windows to prevent Discord from automatically starting on our computers, although it is a method only recommended for advanced users. It consists of removing Discord from the startup programs folder. Here is how to execute this procedure:

  1. First we press the keys Windows + R to open the Run dialog box.
  2. In the box we write shell: startup and press the Enter key.
  3. Finally, if we detect a Discord shortcut in the folder, we simply have to use the delete option.

From System Preferences (macOS)

And although this blog is almost exclusively dedicated to the Windows universe, it is worth explaining how you can prevent Discord from starting automatically on a Mac. The method consists of disabling the program from the System Preferences menu. These are the steps to follow:

  1. We open System preferences on our Mac.
  2. Then we select "Users and groups".
  3. In the list that appears on the left side of the screen, we choose our user.
  4. Then we click on the tab «Start items».
  5. We look for Discord in the list of applications, select it and We use the "minus" (-) button to remove it from the list.

With this simple method, we will get Discord to stop starting automatically every time the Mac is turned on. It will only open when we start it manually.
