Microsoft shows how Edge is the web browser that consumes the least energy

  • Browsers now compete on energy efficiency.
  • Edge offers the best performance in battery life.
  • Chrome is the least power efficient.
  • Edge has fewer plugins, which improves its efficiency.

While web browsers once competed on performance and quality , we now find their developers boasting about their ability to consume the least amount of battery power possible. This is also due to the lack of innovation in battery technology and how browsers are increasingly resource-intensive.

Microsoft is now demonstrating how its Edge web browser is the most energy-efficient , while simultaneously indicating that Google Chrome performs the worst in this regard. This is a crucial feature for laptop users who need to closely monitor the energy efficiency of the programs installed on their computers.

Microsoft conducts several tests to demonstrate Edge's improved efficiency , but the most relevant of these tests involves using four identical Surface Books to play the same HD video in four different web browsers: Firefox, Chrome, Opera, and Edge. The test is designed to determine which browser will consume the laptop's power the fastest.

Telemetry

The first is Chrome, which uses 4 hours and 20 minutes ; the second is Firefox with 5 hours and 9 minutes; and Opera, surprisingly, reaches 6 hours and 18 minutes. Microsoft is the clear winner with Edge, reaching 7 hours and 22 minutes of video streaming.

edge test

It's worth noting that Edge has an extra feature that helps it consume fewer resources : it doesn't have nearly as many add-ons as Firefox or Chrome. These are factors to consider when choosing between browsers, but if you're looking for a simple browser without add-ons for browsing the web, Edge seems like the clear winner. The only difference is that Chrome remains the most widely used browser.
